Muscat: The Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) in Oman has arrested expatriate vendors who were found to be selling expired tea mixed with beer and non-chewable tobacco called ‘afdal’ in Salalah province, south of Oman.

The authorities started keeping a watch on some of the stalls after the high demand for a brew being sold under the name ‘karak chai’ (strong tea) aroused suspicions.

After searches were carried out at some of the stalls and the vendors’ residences, the officials seized expired tea, milk cans, beer cans, afdal and dirty pots that didn’t meet public health criteria.

Rusty nails used to open milk cans were also seized.

The vendors were also found to be using water from toilets to boil the tea for customers.

The vendors were found to be filling the brew in large containers and selling it in different areas of Salalah province.

The PACP called upon the public not to visit makeshift stalls to have tea for the sake of their own health and to report such stalls to the concerned authorities.
