Muscat: Oman and Iran have signed agreement to demarcate maritime boundaries between the two countries in the Sea of Oman on Tuesday.

The agreement was signed by both of the Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister, Javad Zarif and Oman’s Interior Minister, Hamood bin Faisal Al Busiadi.

The statement issued by the the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hailed the spirit of understanding prevailed between the two countries.

The statement said that such agreement hopes to contribute in strengthening the good neighbourly and friendly relations between two countries. The statement also pointed out such agreement would befit the rest of the regional states.

“Such agreement between two countries will make Iranian and Omani relations stronger”, said Zarif.

The agreement is the first of its kind since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, according to Iranian media reports.

Zarif arrived in Muscat on Tuesday also to discuss some regional and international issues including the Yemen crisis.

Diplomatic sources told Gulf News that Zarif discussed with the Omani officials the crisis in Yemen, to put an end for the airstrikes led by the Saudi coalition.

The source added that the two sides also discussed finding ways to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid for Yemenis as many suffer from the shortage in the food, water and fuel due to the war.

The source declined to give further details about whether Iranian delegation met with Al Houthis delegation in Muscat.

A delegation of the Al Houthi Ansar Allah group, led by head of Al Houthi political council, Saleh Al Samad arrived in Muscat last Saturday to discuss ending the war in Yemen.
