Dubai: A popular nightclub in Muscat has cancelled a “pyjama” themed party after a wave of criticism on social media.
A number of Omanis on twitter reacted angrily at the idea of a party in the Crowne Plaza’s Zouk club in which attendees would wear clothes that are meant to be worn in the privacy of one’s home, with some saying the theme was “un-Islamic” and contrary to Omani values.
The party, initially scheduled for Friday April 25, promised free pillows upon entry for “the big pillow fight”. Cover charge for men was OMR20 (Dh190) and women were allowed free entry.
Earlier on Friday however, Zouk club posted a message on its Facebook page saying that the pyjama party was cancelled “due to some technical issues” and that the club would operate as normal with the regular dress code.
Some on twitter demanded that the government intervene and stop the party.
@saba2108 however tweeted: “Why are you making a big deal out of this issue? On normal nights people go to clubs in much worse clothes”.
An Arabic Twitter hashtag was created, which read: “the sleepwear party in the Crowne Plaza”.
Another twitter user, Nada Al Bulushi, tweeted an Arabic Internet meme showing a bedroom with the caption: “Wake me up when your society gets better”.
A Twitter user called Hiba tweeted in English: “Woah, they even started a hashtag about it. Zouk had worse parties, y’all are just being drama queens.”
