Muscat: A 29-year-old Omani fisherman who went missing in the Sea of Oman was found by the Royal Oman Police (ROP) rescue team and residents of Barka province on Tuesday evening.

He had gone fishing on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Oman’s police. The fisherman was found drifting in the sea after his boat’s engine failed.

An ROP official told Gulf News that the Omani fisherman is in stable condition. The rescue operations lasted for more than six hours.

More than seven Omani fishermen have been rescued after they went missing in the Sea of Oman on the country’s northern coast in 2016 so far, according to police.

Engine failure and running out of fuel are the key reasons behind such incidents.

Oman police have urged fishermen to make sure that they have enough fuel in their boats, avoid fishing in remote and rough sea areas and to do maintenance works on the boats before they set off for fishing.

Last January, two Omani fishermen who went missing in the Sea of Oman were safely brought ashore by rescue teams. The two brothers, residents of Al Aqar village in the Shinas province, went on a fishing trip and found themselves drifting in the sea after their boat’s engine failed.

Around 20,000 Omanis work in the fishing sector in Oman, according to Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries figures.
