Muscat: Medium to heavy rains, hailstorms, and strong winds are expected to lash Oman for four days starting from Thursday, according to the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (Paca).

The latest satellite images and weather charts reveal the depression is likely to hit Oman on Thursday evening leading to thundershowers, hailstones and strong winds.

The forecast says that most parts of the country will be hit by medium to heavy rains.

The depression will start in the Musandam, South Batinah and Buraimi governorates on Thursday and then extend to Dhaira, Dhakliya, South and North of Sharqiyah, as well as the Muscat and Dhofar governorates.

The highest temperature so far recorded by the Paca has been 34 Celsius, heralding the onset of summer in Oman.

In a statement, the Paca urged residents to stay away from low-lying areas, as well as overflowing wadis, while crossing roads.

Fishermen and other seafarers have been advised not to venture into the sea unless they are updated with the latest weather forecast.

Heavy rains lashed Oman in February, flooding some parts of Muscat and other provinces as well as causing minor road accidents.

The heavy downpour also flooded some parts of the Muscat International Airport, as a result some flights were delayed or diverted to neighbouring countries.

Rainfall in 2007 claimed 49 lives, which was followed by Phet Cyclone in 2010 that claimed 24 lives.
