Muscat: Four Omanis were killed instantly in a head-on collision between two vehicles in the Auwaifyah area of Adam province on Friday evening. Three others were injured in the crash, according to the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

Wrong overtaking was cited as the reason for the fatal crash.

The injured persons are in Nizwa hospital, approximately 100km away from the area of the accident.

On August 17, four Omanis from the same family were killed when their car flipped over in the Aseelah area of Jalan Bani Bu Ali province of the Sharqiyah governorate.

Twenty-five people have died in road accidents in August alone.

Many of the accidents occur on the Adam-Salalah road where more than 20 people have died in accidents since June.

The road has witnessed increased traffic as many people head to Salalah, a popular tourist destination, for vacation.

Many Gulf nationals and residents also travel to Salalah to escape the sweltering summer heat.

Salalah is known for its moderate temperatures and lush green landscapes.

On average, two people are killed in road accidents every day in Oman.

Oman has a high number of road accidents, with 6,276 crashes recorded in 2015, resulting in more than 675 deaths.

A total of 336 people were killed in 2,100 road accidents nationwide until the end of June this year, according to National Centre for Statistics and Information.
