Muscat: Five Omanis were killed in a head-to-head collision in Maknyat village of Ibri province on Thursday evening.

Four of them were burnt alive in the gruesome accident that occurred around 7pm on Thursday.

Another was tossed out of the vehicle and died on the way to Ibri hospital, according to Royal Oman Police (ROP).

Personnel at the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA), had to use special equipment to remove the bodies from the accident spot.

The police said that reckless overtaking caused the accident.

Two of them were newly-weds from Homanyah village in Ibri.

They were on their way from Muscat to Ibri to enjoy the weekend with their families, the ROP official said.

The bodies of the victims were laid to rest yesterday afternoon.

Ahmad Al Kalbani, one of the witnesses, told Gulf News that he could not do anything to rescue the victims.

“The two vehicles caught fire seconds after the collision took place. I heard some of them screaming and crying, asking for help,” said Al Kalbani.
