Muscat: In what should come as a big relief for many road users, fuel stations, restrooms, coffee shops, restaurants and mosques are to be built on the Muscat Expressway.

The Oman Daily newspaper reported on Sunday that the Ministry of Housing has selected locations for establishing eight petrol stations along the key stretch.

The Ministry of Housing has rehabilitated all the locations ahead of the construction of the petrol stations, which will feature various amenities.

Officials said the delay in building petrol stations in this vital stretch was to ensure the highest safety standards as well as to meet other regulations.

The projects came after repeated demands by Muscat Expressway commuters for authorities to build petrol stations with essential facilities.

Welcoming the move, Ahmad Al Batashi, a private sector employee and daily commuter, told Gulf News building petrol stations with facilities was very important on this stretch.

Al Batashi said many commuters had seen their vehicles running out of fuel as there was no single petrol station on this stretch.

Salam Al Mahrooqi, another commuter, said the Ministry of Housing along with other authorities should facilitate measures for investors to build those stations in the near future.

Al Mahrooqi said the petrol stations will serve thousands of commuters.

The 75km Muscat Expressway opened to traffic in 2011 and serves more than one million residents.
