Muscat: Doctors at the Omani capital’s Al Khoulah hospital have successfully conducted the skin grafting procedure on Jordanian child Sulaiman, who and his sister Ghazl had suffered severe burns after their car caught fire at a petrol station in Sur province, their father told Gulf News on Tuesday.

“Doctors at the hospital told me that Sulaiman is expected to gain consciousness today and he could talk to us after the surgery,” said 33-year-old Mohammad Sulaiman.

The man had left the children unattended in the car while he went to shop at a nearby grocery store.

Mohammad had earlier said that that he left a lighter in the front seat and that his children were playing with it, which might have sparked the fire.

Four-year-old Ghazl sustained 70 per cent burns, while her three-year-old brother, Sulaiman, suffered 30 burns.

Ghazl remains in critical condition with no sign of improvement after almost two weeks since the incident, according to her father.

Omani Mohammad Al Hashemi rescued the children when he heard their screams in the car.

Omanis have launched a campaign on social media to raise money for the children’s medical bills.
