Muscat: An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale was recorded on Sunday afternoon by the Seismological Centre of Sultan Qaboos University.

This is the second earthquake in less than three days after a tremor measured at 5.3 was recorded between the sea of Oman and Iran last Thursday.

According to the seismological centre, the quake was recorded around 3:16 pm between the Sea of Oman and Iran.

The epicentre of the tremor was 255 kilometres to the east of Muscat.

Some residents of Muscat felt the quake but no loss of property was reported.

Officials at the Directorate General of Meteorology allayed concerns about the quake leading to a tsunami.

Five minor quakes were recorded between April and May.
