Muscat: A 70-year-old Omani woman reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree with a rope in Shinas province, Oman’s northern coast, on Saturday afternoon.

The crime scene unit rushed to the incident spot following the report from the residents.

The old woman died on the way to Shinas health centre and was laid to rest on Saturday evening.

The mother, who lived with her daughter in Soor Al Mazarei area of Shinas, was mentally-ill, according to village residents.

She had fracture on her left arm after falling down the front doorsteps of her house.

Residents told Gulf News, that the woman complained of unbearable pain in her arm and other chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure.

An official at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) told Gulf News that there was no criminal suspicion.

Last week, Personnel at the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) successfully prevented an Indian worker from jumping off a building in Buraimi province when he tried to end his life.

In November, an Indian couple committed suicide in Jifnain area of Muscat governorate by electrocution.

The suicide rate in Oman is still very low compared to the global rate. It had only registered six cases in 2014 and 2015 respectively, according to ROP figures.
