Muscat: An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale was recorded on Thursday evening by the Seismological Centre of Sultan Qaboos University.

According to the centre, the location of the quake was between the Sea of Oman and Iran, with a distance of thirteen kilometres in depth, longitude of 23.7 and latitude of 58.5. The quake occurred at around 2.25pm.

The quake location was far from Muscat by a distance of 255 kilometres.

The quake was felt by the residents of Yiti area of Muscat.

No losses in properties were reported.

Ahmad Al Wahibi, Yiti resident, told Gulf News that he felt the quake which lasted for three seconds.

“I took my family out the house after that in case of happening another one at the same time”, says Ahmad.

Oman had witnessed three quakes last month between the Sea of Oman and Iran.

Specialists at the Seismological centre affirmed that successive tremors that took place were due to a moving crack and seismic movements, stressing that the occurrence is normal and not cause for concern.
