Manama: The number of casualties in the suicide bombing in a mosque in Al Qadeeh in eastern Saudi Arabia has risen to 23 following the death of a wounded worshipper.

Jaafar Ahmad Al Abdul Razzaq died on Sunday at a hospital in Germany where he was being treated following the terrorist attack at Imam Ali Mosque during Friday prayers on May 22. His death was announced by his family.

The health minister Khalid Al Faleh had ordered that Jaafar and other wounded worshippers be transferred to a hospital in Germany for further medical treatment.

The blast, claimed by Daesh group, was the first of two attacks on Shiite mosques in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. The second, one week later, was foiled after the bomber was spotted disguised as a woman in the vicinity of the mosque in the city of Dammam, and prevented from entering. He reacted by blowing himself up, killing four people were killed in the attack.

A third attack occurred in Kuwait when a Saudi national who has never left his country and did not have any crime record, flew to Kuwait City early on Friday where he was given an explosives belt. He was driven to Al Sadiq Mosque and blew himself up amid worshippers, killing 27 and wounding 226.

None of the three attacks caused any rift between Sunnis and Shiites or succeeded to exacerbate sectarian tensions, and while security at and around mosques were stepped up, official and popular initiatives were launched in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and neighbouring Bahrain to consolidate national unity and present a common front against all acts of terrorism.
