Manama: Ahmad Al Saleh, an iconic figure in the Kuwaiti drama, died today in the US where he was being treated. He was 77.

Ahmad, whose career spanned over 55 years, started acting in school plays before joining the first generation of Kuwaiti theatre actors in the 1960s.

He performed in several plays throughout the years and was an outstanding star of the Popular Theatre.

He had starring roles in television dramas starting in 1974 and performed in two movies in 1971 and in 1976.

Ahmad was an active member of the cast of the hugely popular Arabic version of “Sesame Street” in 1979 and his character Abdullah was among the most cherished by viewers, young and old, across the Arab world.

He was last year presented the state award in the category of arts for his contributions to the Kuwaiti and Arab art.

In 1979, he was honoured for his dramatic creativity and continuations.

Ahmad is credited with around 120 works widely acclaimed by the critiques and the audiences.

He will be buried as soon as his body is repatriated from the US.
