Dubai: Kuwait’s ambassador to the UAE has denied reports of Kuwaiti citizens dying in UAE jails.

The ambassador, Salah Mohammad Ba’aijan, said on Monday in remarks published by the Kuwaiti news agency Kuna that there was no truth whatsoever to the rumours circulating on social media networks about the death of the citizens.

He said that there were no records of any Kuwaitis dying in UAE prisons, adding that currently there are “only two Kuwaitis being held in Dubai”. One of them is in detention while the other has faced a court ruling.

The ambassador said that his country’s embassy in Abu Dhabi and consulate in Dubai had made efforts “and is continuing to make efforts” to uphold the interests of its two citizens, and looking out for their needs.

He also urged the public to be careful about circulating information on the case.

In February, eight Kuwaiti students from the University of Sharjah and Ajman were expelled because they violated the laws of the two universities by forming a students’ union without the permission of university administrators. The students were also said to have collected donations and held illegal gatherings at university dorms, in violation of UAE laws.
