Manama: Kuwait’s interior ministry has turned over 47 Iranian prisoners serving sentences in Kuwaiti correctional facilities to the Iranian authorities, a ministry press statement said.

The step was taken in implementation of a bilateral agreement for prisoner exchange between Kuwait and Iran, the statement, carried by Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) said.

The transfer was carried out in the presence of Kuwaiti and Iranian officials from the ministries of interior and justice.

The prisoners were flown home on an Iranian carrier, the statement added.

Kuwaiti officials said that Kuwait was fully committed to human rights and to all related recommendations.

Under the international transfer agreements, the prisoners serving jail sentences in Kuwait are sent home where they serve the remainder of their sentences in a correctional facility in their countries and close to their families, the statement said.
