Manama: Kuwaiti police have arrested a man who obtained the Kuwaiti citizenship fraudulently and referred him to the public prosecution.

The man was arrested after the police, acting on a tip-off, launched an investigation and discovered the act of forgery.

According to the case documents, an Iranian expatriate woman whose Iranian husband had died told a Kuwaiti man who wanted to marry her that her condition for marriage was to secure the Kuwaiti citizenship for her son from the first husband.

The Kuwaiti man provided false documents to the General Directorate for Citizenship, to obtain citizenship for the Iranian son of his second wife.

Upon his arrest, the Iranian man told the police that he was aware of the forgery that allowed him to obtain the Kuwaiti citizenship and avail benefits provided by the state to Kuwaiti citizens, Kuwaiti daily Al Rai reported on Friday.

Kuwait has been engaged in a massive operation to unearth cases of forgery and false information that enabled several foreigners, with the complicity of Kuwaitis, to acquire the Kuwaiti citizenship.

Despite the formidable challenges in dealing with the highly sensitive and intricately complex naturalisation issue, the country has been able to unearth some cases of forgery.

Under the Kuwaiti law, the nationality can be revoked if the applicant presents fake certificates during the application process.

The revocation is ordered by the cabinet based on a request from the interior minister.

Last month, a senior interior ministry official denied reports that pressure had been exerted on the ministry to stop their efforts to nab citizenship fraudsters and insisted that they would continue their relentless fight against those who obtained the Kuwaiti citizenship fraudulently.
