Manama: Kuwait’s Criminal Court on Monday sentenced a former lawmaker to three years in prison for forging his identity card.

Mohammad Al Juwaihal was found guilty of giving false information to a civil officer in charge of identity cards.

The officer believed that the ex-MP was telling him the truth and did not ask for evidence supporting his claim of a new address, local news site Al Aan reported.

Al Juwaihal was able to obtain the card.

He was subsequently found guilty of forging an official document and was later sentenced.

Al Juwaihal was a highly controversial figure during the five months he spent at the parliament. In February last year, he was sentenced to one month in prison for spitting on another MP.

He was also asked to pay 5,001 Kuwaiti Dinars (Dh65,000) in compensation to former MP Hamad Al Mattar. The incident occurred on May 5, 2012, as lawmakers were engaged in a debate at the parliament hall and was immediately condemned by MPs and ministers present at the session.

Both the parliament and the government decided to bar Al Juwaihal from entering the premises or attending the sessions.

Reports, citing people present during the incident, claimed that the former lawmaker was drunk.
