Manama: The Kuwait Society for the Protection of Animals and Their Habitat has been granted legal status in a move that affirms a positive approach toward protecting all living creatures of various species.

Aisha Al Humaidhi, the society chairperson, welcomed the decision and stressed the necessity of protecting animals and their habitat and the need to guide human beings to be kind to living creatures.

“It is a great success for the society thanks to its diligent work since it was established nine years ago,” she said at a ceremony hosted to mark the society’s official proclamation.

The society has been involved in numerous activities that included holding workshops aimed at educating the public about responsibility of hosting an animal as well as providing a refuge for any animal in need of care.

The society also provides residents who have animals or pets with regular advice and guidance, secures refuges for various animals, including horses, runs a center for wildlife rehabilitation, and deals with stray animals, environmental cleanliness and relevant education, Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) reported.

Shaikha Fatima Mubarak Al Sabah, the society deputy chairperson, said they were grateful to all the people who have supported the national association, stressing that Kuwait deserved to be a beacon of humanity and progress.

“The society organizes campaigns to preserve various species on land and at sea and deals with smuggled animals to ensure that the relevant law is applied in this regard,” she said. “The society also monitors cases of cruel treatment of animals and seeks to improve the habitat for settled and migrating animals. It also endeavours to secure refuge for farm animals that have been discarded or subjected to cruel treatment,” she said, quoted by the official news agency.

The society has also prepared a special programme for schoolchildren to reinforce in them the culture of compassion with animals and ways to deal with animals and their basic needs and to provide care, she added.
