Manama: The family of the Saudi suicide bomber who killed 28 people and injured more than 200 in a Kuwait mosque on Friday have distanced themselves from him, insisting they fully rejected his "distorted thinking".
The family said they had nothing to do with the heinous crime of Fahad Sulaiman Abdul Mohsen Al Gabaa, and renewed their pledge of allegiance to King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, to the Crown Prince and to the Deputy Crown Prince.
"We extended our condolences to the Amir of Kuwait, to the families of the victims and to the people of Kuwait, and we wish the wounded speedy recovery," the family said in a statement.
The family said they fully supported their country and opposed the alien ideology that did not respect religion or mosques or the holy month of Ramadan.
On Sunday, Kuwait said the suicide bomber who carried out the country’s worst militant attack was Fahad Sulaiman Abdul Mohsen Al Gabaa, a Saudi citizen who had arrived airport at dawn on Friday, a few hours before he detonated explosives at Imam Al Sadeq mosque in the capital. He reportedly had no criminal record in Saudi Arabia or in Kuwait.
Driver detained
Kuwait said it detained the driver who transported him to the mosque where he killed and injured worshippers.
According to Kuwaiti daily Al Rai, the driver, born in 1989, was staying illegally in the country and that he was arrested in a house owned by an extremist.
The police found in the car the traditional thobe worn by the bomber as he arrived in Kuwait and which he replaced with another thobe under which he concealed his explosives belt, the daily added.
In Bahrain, the authorities said the bomber had transited through its international airport between his flight from Riyadh and his flight to Kuwait.
"The person responsible for the terrorist blast in Kuwait arrived at Bahrain International Airport from Riyadh at 22:40 on June 25 on Gulf Air flight 170, and remained in transit until he left for Kuwait on Gulf Air flight 211 at 1:10 on Friday June 26," the General Director of Security for Ports said.
