Istanbul: The Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for a suicide car bombing in the Saudi Arabian capital that injured two police officers, according to a statement circulated on Friday on social media.

The incident in Riyadh took place on Thursday, the eve of Eid Al Fitr, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan.

An unnamed Interior Ministry spokesman was quoted by the state-run news agency SPA as saying the bomber, who was killed, was a Saudi national born in 1997.

The bomber appeared to have been radicalised locally, as the official was quoted as saying he had never left the country.

Investigations into the attack that took place on a road north of the Al Hair prison, which holds convicted extremists, are ongoing.
