Manama: Two expatriates, a German and a Filipino, have died after their boat capsized near King Fahad Causeway, the 25-kilometre terrestrial link between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Their bodies were found after a search and rescue operation that started early afternoon on Friday and finished on Saturday morning, the Coastguard said in a statement.

The boat reportedly capsized at 2.10pm, and Coastguard vessels and Police Aviation rushed to the scene and rescued four of the six passengers who survived. They were all in stable condition, the Acting Coast Guard Commander said.

“The divers searched for the missing two while the boat was taken to the King Fahad Causeway base,” he said. “The search continued until Saturday morning and the bodies of the two victims were found. Legal procedures were taken and the Public Prosecution was notified.”

Boat incidents are rare in Bahrain, a country with rich traditions in seafaring.

The Coastguard urged seafarers to wear life jackets while sailing and to take the necessary precautionary measures in order to be ready for emergencies.
