Manama: Several detainees held in Bahrain are expected to be pardoned under an amnesty to be announced by King Hamad, Public Prosecutor Ali Bin Fadhl Al Bouainain said.

“His Majesty King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa will issue a Royal Decree pardoning a number of inmates for humanitarian reasons,” he said.

“The Public Prosecution, along with the Office of the Ombudsman, conducted a comprehensive review of inmates, and in coordination with the National Institution for Human Rights, identified inmates who meet the conditions that were based on a number of relevant humanitarian categories,” he said.

Accordingly, the Public Prosecution has prepared a list of inmates to be considered for the royal pardon.

“The review has taken into consideration a number of categories. These include women, inmates under the age of 18, inmates with special medical needs and conditions, inmates who have shown commitment and responsiveness to social and drug rehabilitation programmes, and inmates who have been sentenced for less than three years,” Al Bouainain said in a statement carried by Bahrain News Agency (BNA).

The review covered cases in which a final verdict has been issued and the inmate has served at least half of the term.

Based on the specific criteria and conditions, the Public Prosecution has completed its review of the inmates and raised a recommendation in preparation for the royal pardon,” he said.
