Manama: King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa has paid rich tribute to all those who contributed to the promulgation of the Unified Family Law which he described as “a new milestone in our comprehensive development and a landmark legal chapter that protects the family entity.”

The king ratified the law hours after its draft was unanimously supported by the Shura Council, the upper chamber of the bicameral parliament, in the ultimate step in the constitutional process to promulgate a law.

Last Thursday, the draft was endorsed by the Council of Representatives, the lower house, following a smooth debate among lawmakers who insisted on its significance for women, families and Bahrain.

King Hamad, who was receiving Prime Minister Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, Crown Prince Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Speaker Ahmad Al Mulla, Shura Chairman Ali Al Saleh, senior lawmakers and heads of parliamentary committees, hailed the efforts exerted to turn the proposal into a law.

The Family Law bolsters Bahraini judiciary and strengthens guarantees that protect litigators’ rights and preserve Bahraini family cohesion, he said.

The new legislation is a source of pride for all Bahrainis and a quantum leap that bolsters the kingdom’s standing and pioneering role among advanced and civilised nations, he added.
