Manama: A Bahraini husband got his revenge on his wife who had asked for divorce by revealing that she had forged her high school diploma to get a job.

The couple reportedly had marital problems and the wife, 33, wanted to end their marriage by filing for a divorce.

However, the husband was not keen on the separation, but as the case reached the court, he decided to take his revenge by reporting to an official at the interior ministry that his wife who was working as a cashier at one of its shopping stores had submitted a forged high school diploma in order to get hired.

A thorough examination of the application documents and contacts with the education ministry concluded that the high school diploma was not genuine. The education ministry said that the wife never graduated from high school and that she still had to take 14 credit hours in order to obtain the diploma.

Confronted with the evidence, the wife admitted that she had used a computer to alter details on a relative’s high school diploma and present it as her own.

She attributed her act to her wish to move from working for companies in the private sector to a new position in the public sector.

The wife said that her husband reported her to the interior ministry t exact revenge after she had filed for divorce, local daily Al Ayam said.

Her case was referred t the public prosecution where she was charged with forging an official document and providing false information while applying for a position within the interior ministry.

A court on Tuesday sentenced her to one year in prison.
