Bahraini court revokes citizenship of two defendants implicated in attack

Manama: A Bahraini court has sentenced 29 defendants to jail terms ranging from five years to life imprisonment.

Terror Crime Prosecution Chief Advocate, General Ahmad Al Hammadi confirmed the verdict and said that the convictions related to “attempted murder of policemen, using and possessing explosives and weapons, rioting, and receiving and providing explosives and training in order to commit terrorist crimes.”

Al Hammadi added that the High Criminal Court also revoked the citizenship of two defendants and ordered 27 defendants to pay damages of BD2,782.

The convictions related to an incident that occurred on December 19 last year when the defendants detonated an explosive device with the intent of murdering policemen, he added. The explosion caused injuries to security personnel and damage to patrol vehicles.
“Investigations uncovered the locations where the defendants concealed the explosives and bomb-making materials,” Al Hammadi said in a statement.

“Police seized five ready-made explosives, remote detonators, firearms and ammunition. The Public Prosecution brought the charges against the defendants based on statements recorded from the accused, witness testimonies and forensic evidence. The court heard the case in the presence of the defendants and their legal teams. The defendants will continue to be afforded full legal rights and access to their legal counsel in accordance with the law,” he said.
