Manama: A bomb squad in Bahrain has defused a homemade explosive placed in a car near a highway in the capital Manama.

The car was parked on King Faisal Highway on Sunday evening, the interior ministry said in a statement.

“The car raised suspicion and an examination of the data revealed that it had been reported stolen. The police found and defused a pipe bomb and two gas cylinders that had been placed inside the car,” the ministry said in a statement.

An investigation was launched to identify and apprehend those behind the booby-trapped car, as the Public Prosecution was notified, the statement said.

The police urged the public to report suspicious objects to the nearest police directorate or police station or to call the police hotline. Bahrain has pledged a relentless campaign to fight acts of terrorism following the death this month of three policemen, including First Lieutenant Tareq Al Shehi, an officer from the UAE, in a blast in the suburban village of Daih.

Receiving the family of the Emirati officer on Sunday, King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa “extended his heartfelt condolences to the martyr’s relatives” and “described the martyrdom of the UAE officer as an additional chapter in the popular cohesion and common destiny between Bahrain and the UAE.”

King Hamad reiterated the resolve of the GCC countries to confront subversive and terrorist ideologies and organisations and to continue the fight against terrorism inside and outside in order to maintain the security and stability of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Bahrain News Agency reported.

King Hamad told the family that their martyred son Al Shehi had set “a wonderful example in defending justice and in protecting the innocent.” Bahrain had paid a rich tribute to the fallen UAE officer and several officials and a popular delegation went to Ras Al Khaimah to offer their condolences to Al Shehi family.
