Manama: A Bahraini policewoman has been praised for her quick thinking and physical courage after she rescued an elderly woman from a fire.

Shereen Bu Kamal said that she was at the site of the fore that broke out in Muharraq, Bahrain’s second largest city, when she heard screams from a young girl who was urging her to help her mother to safety.

The recalcitrant mother had refused to evacuate her house even though the fire that broke out at the nearby market was ominously moving towards the residence.

Shereen promptly moved towards the house and despite the thick smoke, she managed to enter the residence. However, despite the pleas and arguments of the servicewoman, the old resident refused to move.

Aware of the impeding danger, Shereen took the woman out of the house before it became filled with deadly smoke.

People anxiously waiting outside were relieved to see the resident and the servicewoman reach safety despite the smoke and the fire and praised Shereen as an exceptional heroine whose selflessness at times of danger rescued a woman from a certain death.

The woman’s relatives were all praise for Shereen and expressed deep gratitude as firefighters and civil defence and police personnel congratulated her on her heroic action.

The fire that broke out at the city’s largest market and ravaged around 30 shops happened at around 1.20pm on Monday. It started in one of the shops and the presence of flammable materials made it spread quickly to other shops.
