Manama: Bahrain said that it was keeping the deputy secretary-general of a political society in custody for his role in preparing and issuing a statement condemning the participation of the kingdom in the military operation to restore legitimacy in Yemen.

“The Public Prosecution had completed its investigation into the report of the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science on a statement issued by the secretary-general of a political society,” Advocate General Wael Bu Allay said on Sunday. “In the statement he had published on behalf of his political society, the secretary-general criticised the military action currently carried out by the kingdom of Bahrain, alongside a number of brotherly countries, for the sake of restoring legitimacy and stability in Yemen,” he said in a statement carried by Bahrain News Agency (BNA).

“The Public Prosecution charged him with deliberately disseminating lies, spreading rumours and propaganda that may harm the military operations of the armed forces, and defaming foreign countries publicly. The Public Prosecution remanded him in custody,” he said.

Last week, the Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry said it would file a lawsuit for the dissolution of the Unity Democratic Gathering Society (Al Wahdawi) “due to grave violations of the provisions of the constitution and the law and the undermining of national security.”
