Tourists may be able to visit Russia without a securing a visa if they’re travelling to watch two major sports events. Travellers, however, must secure the necessary pass, including a valid ticket, in order to avail themselves of visa-free entry.
In an advisory posted on the Russian Federation website in Washington DC, foreign visitors are advised that they can enter the country “without issued Russian visas.”
The policy applies to fans travelling to Russia for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017, scheduled between June 17, 2017 and July 2, 2017 and the FIFA 2018 World Cup, set to take place from June 14 to July 15, 2018.
“In order to be admitted to Russia, foreign citizens/stateless persons must have a valid identity document (“tourist” passport) and a “personalised card of the spectator” (also known as a “Fan ID),” the notice reads.
It was reported last year that Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the visa-free system for 2018 World Cup fans.
According to a report by AP, fans who have secured tickets and a “fan ID” can enter Russia without a visa for the duration of the tournament.
