Dubai: After performing surgery on his patients, a doctor in the UK decided to leave his mark. He has been fined 10,000 pounds (Dh50,441) for burning his initials into patients’ livers during transplant operations, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).
Simon Bramhall, a 53-year-old liver, spleen and pancreas surgeon, will also be performing community service for 12 months and has been told to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.
He used an argon beam coagulator, which is used to stop livers from bleeding during operations, for this task.

He signed “SB” into his patient’s livers. However, the marks do not impair the liver’s function and disappear over time.
Bramhall was suspended from his post at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth hospital in 2013 after another surgeon spotted the initials on a failed donor liver, as stated in a report published by The Guardian, UK-based newspaper. Bramhall then resigned the following summer.
The hospital did confirm that there was “no impact whatsoever” on the success of the operations.
