A huge explosion shook the city of Split in Croatia, injuring at least five people, according to local media.

A Croat news website reported that the blast took place in Ameropa Grain Terminal, damaging grain silos in the Vranjic area of city's north port, and injuring five workers — three of whom are in critical condition.

Russia Today, earlier reported the blast took place at the airport.

The news site quoted hospital sources as saying that some of the workers sustained life-threatening injuries.

One worker who had burns affecting up to 35 per cent of this body underwent emergency surgery in a local hospital, it added.

The explosion at the grain silos at the northern harbour may have been caused by gas build-up due to improper ventilation, the site added citing emergency workers.

An eyewitness told the site that he saw a silo "flying in the air" after the blast.

A Turkish ship reloaded with grain sailed only half an hour before the blast, the site added.

Split, also known as Spalato in Italian, is the Croatian Republic’s second-largest city and the financial and cultural centre of Dalmatia.

It has a harbour for ferries, cruise liners and welcomes tourists from all over the world.
