Manila: A python measuring nearly 4 metres (13 feet) was found in a parking lot of a housing complex in suburban Quezon City, one of the cities comprising Metro Manila, late on Wednesday night, sources said.

The python, which usually kills prey by constriction and asphyxiation, was turned over to wildlife park officials on Thursday.

The yellow-spotted python was secured in a plastic drum before being brought to the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Centre (NAPWC) on North Avenue, according to National Wildlife Rescue Center (NWRC) which held custody of the snake during the handover ceremony.

'Treasure'

“The newly-arrived python is a treasure to the NWRC — it ensures the protection of wildlife resources and safety of visitors inside the zoo,” said the NWRC.

Nine members of the Barangay Public Safety Officer (BPSO) took the python to the zoon at the NAPWC, said Renato Enriquez, village chief of Tandang Sora and Talipapa villages.

Refuge in parking lot

“Residents complained about the dangerous python that many of them would see in the elevated parking lot of their condominium’s building,” said Enriquez.

“The python was coiled when found in a dark corner of the parking lot, otherwise all of us would have a hard time keeping it overnight and transporting it to the park early Thursday morning,” Enriquez said.

The middle class condominium straddles Tandang Sora and Talipapa villages.

Pythons are commonly found in forested and mountainous lairs all over the Philippines.
