Islamabad: Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif yesterday asked the country’s anti-corruption National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to perform its functions judiciously.

Addressing a political gathering at Bahawalpur in Punjab province, stronghold of the ruling party, he said that NAB needs to take up cases only after thorough initial investigation, local television channels reported.

“No one should be harassed without verification and solid proof,” the reports quoted him as saying. He did not cite any specific instance in support.

Necessary action

The prime minister said he would also take up the issue with the NAB chairman.

If anyone was unduly targeted the government would take necessary action, he reportedly warned.

Speaking about performance of his government he said midway through its five-year term, it was making progress on all three major fronts — counter-terrorism, reduction of power shortage and alleviation of poverty.

The prime minister attributed the problems faced by country to long spells of military rule and the misgovernance of the previous, elected government of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Sharif pledged that the country’s energy crisis would be fully overcome during the remaining two and a half years of his government.

Tangible development

Stressing the need for continuity of policies for steady growth, he claimed that the country had seen tangible development during his previous two stints in power.

The prime minister asserted that completion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) envisaging a $46 billion (Dh168.82 billion)investment by China would be a game changer.

Work on construction of road networks and power generation schemes under the CPEC is progressing at a rapid pace, he noted.
