Islamabad: United States Senator John McCain has talked to former president Asif Ali Zardari in London by phone, assuring that a bill currently before the US Senate for branding Pakistan a “sponsor of terrorism” will not succeed, according to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

A PPP press release issued in Islamabad said the US Republican party senator emphasised the legislation should not be seen as a deterioration of the US-Pakistan relations since the sponsors of the resolution were a small minority within the Senate.

US lawmakers Ted Poe and Dana Rohrabacher have moved the bill in the Congress.

McCain acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pakistan in the fight against terrorism, the PPP statement said.

Senator McCain agreed that Pakistan was part of the solution to this problem and it was in the interest of peace and stability that it continued to play its part in the fight against the global threat of terrorism, according to the press release.

Zardari told the US lawmaker the hype in Indian propaganda against Pakistan was intended to hide from the world “atrocities being committed by India against Kashmiris.”

The former president said Pakistan wanted a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue through dialogue and in accordance with the wishes of the people of the region.

Zardari has been living abroad for over a year and is currently in London.
