Islamabad: A massive theft of 44,000 litres of diesel in Pakistan Railways (PR) has emerged.

It has also been revealed that officers of Railways who are also close aides of Federal Minister Saad Rafique are involved in this scam.

The diesel theft was discovered in the Signal Engineering department in Lahore. It has been decided to hold a high-level probe into the incident.

According to reports, the Signal Engineering department is said to be most corrupt and incompetent. The official reason given for the consumption of 44,000 litres of diesel is for running a generator, which is used around the clock. However, upon checking the log book it was found that there was huge lacunae between the consumption of diesel in the log book and the times the generator was on. It has been calculated that the Signal Engineering officials have in this case committed fraud to the tune of one million rupees. A high-level inquiry against them is underway.

The spokesman of Pakistan Railway did not respond to a query in this regard.

Railway sources said that the Signal Division Lahore is a hub of corruption.
