Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president and MP from Hyderabad Asaduddin Owaisi has urged the government of India to strongly condemn the American administration’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Reacting to the announcement of President Donald Trump, Asaduddin Owaisi said in a statement that the move made it much more difficult to achieve the goal of a sovereign and independent state of Palestine.

“What is the policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the US announcement of making Jerusalem the capital of Israel”, he questioned. He drew the attention to a statement by the minister of external affairs Sushma Swaraj, that support to independent Palestine was the consistent policy of India. “This was reiterated on November 28, 2017 by Sushma Swaraj. What is our stand? This is a grave development against Palestine”, he said.

“It has been consistent opinion of the world community, UN bodies and India that Jerusalem was occupied by Israel in the 1967 June war and it is an occupied territory”, Owaisi said.

Wondering about the impact of this decision on the final settlement of the issue of Palestine, he said he hoped that India would stand with Palestinians.
