Hyderabad: Osmania University, Hyderabad, has decided to accord recognition to degrees from the Islamic religious educational institution Jamia Nizamia Islamia.

Registrar of Osmania University issued a notification to this effect almost two years after chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had given assurance during the annual convocation of Jamia Nizamia.

Under the notification issued after the university’s standing committee decided to give recognition to the degrees, the certificates and degrees of the religious institution will have official recognition.

While the Moulvi certificate will be equivalent to the SSC or entrance test of the university, Alim degree will be equivalent to Intermediate, Fazi will be equal to BA Languages and Kamil degrees will be recognised as MA Languages.

The decision was taken after a prolonged follow up by the authorities of Jamia Nizamia as well as the leaders of Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen who made several representations to Rao and deputy chief minister Kadiyam Srihari.

In the standing committee meeting, Dean Faculty of Department of Oriental Languages, OU Dr Mohammad Zulfiqar Mohiuddin made a detailed presentation about the curriculum, method of working and teaching of modern subjects including English language in Jamia Nizamia.

Jamia Nizamia is nearly 125 years old and the biggest Islamic educational institution whose alumni have earned a lot of fame in the academic field.

Mufti Khaleel Ahmad, Rector, Jamia Nizamia thanked the government for the decision and said that it will help the students of Jamia to pursue higher education in Osmania University and a Kamil graduate can directly join doctoral course of the University.
