Patna: A man in Bihar killed his mother-in-law, chopped her body to pieces and then dumped the dismembered body parts at various locations, irked by her alleged extramarital affair with a local villager.

In what police have described as one of the most bone-chilling murders recorded in recent years, the dismembered parts of victim’s body were recovered between April 18 and April 20 by Patna police along railway tracks and on a train bogey.

However, the murder mystery could be solved only on Sunday evening.

“It was totally a [cold] case and a big challenge for all of us but we have been able to solve it within 48 hours,” Patna’s senior superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj said on Monday, while also announcing to put the case on speedy trial.

According to the police, the victim’s family members were angry since the lady identified as Geeta Devi, 45, began an extramarital affair soon after she reached her in-laws’ house, after her daughter’s marriage.

“She refused to take note of our appeal and continued bringing shame to us. So, we decided to get rid of her. We have no remorse of her murder,” the victim’s daughter Punam Devi told the police after being taken into custody.

Punam’s husband and main accused Ranjan Kumar, however, is absconding.

According to her, she invited her mother for a party at her rented home in Parasa Bazar locality of Patna on April 17 but and served a dish mixed with sedatives.

“When she fell unconscious, my husband along with other accomplices chopped her body into 15 pieces, neatly packed the dismembered parts ... and dumped them at various locations in Patna and Gaya district to mislead the police. We were caught but have no remorse at all for her murder,” she told the media.
