Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has ruled out the possibility of snap polls in the state. Responding to the governor’s address to the joint session in the state legislature, the Chief Minister said the state will not have early elections.

His remarks in the state legislative council on Wednesday came in the backdrop of two major opposition parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, predicting elections in 2018.

While the BJP state spokesman, Krishna Sagar Rao, said the chief minister may go for early elections in 2018 to take advantage of the weakness of the opposition in the state, the state Congress president, N Uttam Kumar Reddy, said that showering of sops in the latest budget of Telangna indicates that the chief minister was planning to go for an early poll in 2018.

“Be it in 2018 or 2019, the Congress is ready to face the elections,” Reddy told media while commenting on the 2017-18 budget.

But KCR did not see any possibility of early polls. “We are confident that the people will bless the good work [of the government]. We are moving forward rapidly by overcoming all the obstacles to achieve all the set goals. Our government is working for the welfare of the people”.

A confident KCR lashed out at the opposition’s allegations. “If they prove any charge against us, I will quit,” he said. He claimed that the political corruption was eradicated to a large extent in the state and there had been no scam in the state during the past two-and-a-half years. “We are bringing a legislation under which action will be taken against any body who levels a false allegation”, KCR said.

Listing various measures taken by his government for the welfare of the weaker sections, the Chief Minister said that the state government was purchasing 8.8 million sheep and goats in order to provide 21 sheep to every Yadav family in the state. “In the next two-and-a-half years the sheep population in the state will go up to four and half crore [45 million] generating an income of Rs20,000 crore [Rs200 billion, Dh11 billion]. The state will be known as the state of rich Yadav families in the country in the years to come”, he said. KCR also promised that the vacancies for veterinary doctors in the state would be filled.

He also promised to abolish the contract employees system. KCR announced the regularisation of the qualified Home Guards and said that it was unfair to make them work for such low wages.

He also pointed out that his government had brought the power situation under control and there was no problem of load-shedding in the state now. “The government is ready to supply 10000 MW power during the current summer season”, he said.

KCR advised the opposition not to create obstructions in the way of the projects and warned that the people were carefully watching their actions.
