Born on November 13, 1980, Kapil Mishra is Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Karawal Nagar constituency of Delhi. Armed with a master’s degree in social work from Delhi School of Social Work, he worked with eminent international organisations like Greenpeace and Amnesty International on political and business policy issues.
He is one of the first people to protest against Commonwealth Games 2010 held in New Delhi and has written a book “It’s Common v/s Wealth” highlighting various scams and social and environmental concerns related with the Games.
As co-founder and coordinator of “Youth for Justice”, a New Delhi-based youth action group that works on spontaneous issues that need cognisance, he has led the youth protests on various socioeconomic issues including farmers suicides in various parts of country and encroachment on Yamuna river bed.
He also joined social activist Anna Hazare in his campaign against corruption. He became active member of Hazare’s India Against Corruption (IAC) movement before joining Aam Admi Party (AAP).
He was considered one of Kejriwal’s trusted lieutenants and he quickly climbed the ladder in the party. In 2015 legislative assembly polls, Mishra went on to win Karawal Nagar seat by more than 40,000 votes.
His image as a promising and effective young leader won him a place in Kejriwal’s cabinet to fulfil the key poll promise of providing water for all. Interestingly, he stood out in his swearing-in ceremony as he took oath in Sanskrit.
