Hyderabad: The murder of an Indian doctor, Achutha Reddy, in Kansas, USA, has left his family back home in Miryalaguda, Telangana, in deep shock.

Dr Reddy, a psychiatrist, was stabbed to death by his patient identified as Umar Rasheed Dutt, also of Indian origin, on Wednesday evening at his clinic.

According to the reports reaching the family here the patient was a regular visitor for counselling from the doctor at his Holistic Clinic in Wichita, Kansas.

According to the Wichita police an argument broke out during the counselling and the patient tried to attack the doctor. While the staff tried to restrain the patient, Dr Reddy escaped from the clinic. However the assailant chased him and stabbed him multiple times.

Dutt was arrested from a nearby park where he was sitting with blood on his hands and shirt. He has been charged with first degree murder.

Reddy did his MBBS from Osmania Medical College in 1986 before going to the US where he did his post graduation from St Louis From University of Internal medicine and started his practice in 1989.

He was certified in psychiatry from American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and was extremely popular among his patients.

His family, including parents Bhadra Reddy and Prajitha, were inconsolable after his killing.

“My son was a non-controversial and calm person. I don’t know how this happened,” he said.

The family was waiting for his body, which is expected to arrive home next week.

This is the second incident of an individual from Telangana getting killed in USA this year.

Software engineer Kuchibhotla Srinivas, a resident of Hyderabad, was shot dead — also in Kansas City — in February this year, in what the police declared to be a hate crime.

His killer Adam Purinton was arrested and charged with first degree murder.
