New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh (MP) police on Tuesday arrested 15 men under charges of sedition following a complaint that they celebrated Pakistan’s victory against India in the finals of ICC Champions Trophy.

The incident occurred in Mohad, nearly 350km from state capital Bhopal.

“We received a complaint that some people started cheering and bursting firecrackers after India lost third wicket in the final match of ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday. It was followed by pro-Pakistan slogans,” Additional Director General (ADG) of Police [Indore region] Ajay Sharma told media.

The accused were produced in a local court on Tuesday which rejected their bail applications and sent them to jail.

They were later taken to Khandwa district jail.

“A local resident identified as Subhash complained that some people shouted pro-Pakistan slogans and burst crackers after Pakistan won the cricket match on Sunday. Following the complaint, we investigated the matter and found that 15 people were involved in it. We have arrested all 15 people,” Inspector Sanjay Pathak told Gulf News.

The arrested persons were booked under Section 120B (punishment for criminal conspiracy) and 124A (sedition) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Security has been stepped up in the town to avoid any law and order situation.

Pakistan had upset India by 180 runs to lift the Champions Trophy in London on Sunday.
