Hyderabad: Hyderabad Central University (HCU) was in the grip of shock over the alleged suicide by a postgraduate student Parveen Nalli in the wee hours of Saturday.
This is the second such incident in the campus this year.
Rohit Vemula, a Dalit research scholar had hanged himself in the same campus in January this year sparking months-long unrest.
Police said Parveen Nalli, first year student of Master in Fine Arts, was found hanging in Room 204 of the hostel by fellow students at around 4am. The students alerted the resident medical officer and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.
Police said they were suspecting suicide but no note was found. “We are trying to find out the cause of his extreme step”, a senior official of Cyberabad commissionerate said.
Police have sent the body to Osmania Hoapital mortuary for autopsy.
Parveen Nalli was a resident of Shadnagar in Mahabubnagar district, 50km away from Hyderabad.
Parveen’s brother Naveen told the police that when he had spoken to him two days back Parveen was unwell.
Parveen’s father is an employee in the BSNL.
The campus was yet to recover from the shock of Rohit Vemula’s suicide in protest against the caste discrimination and harassment by the university authorities. The students were continuing their agitation demanding action against the Vice Chancellor Appa Rao Podile holding him responsible for Rohith’s suicide.
Meanwhile deputy Commissioner of police Madhapur Karthikeya told the media that a suicide note was found in the hostel room where Praveen had hanged himself. “Apparently he was under mental stress and this could be the cause of the suicide”, he said.
Police have sent the suicide note to the forensic laboratory for examination. Police have also take the notebooks and laptop of Praveen in its possession.
