Hyderabad: Even as the no-trust motions moved by the Telugu Desam and the YSR Congress party in the Lok Sabha remained in limbo, all political parties across Andhra Pradesh barring the BJP on Thursday organised the “National Highway Blockade”.

All the parties including the ruling Telugu Desam, the main opposition YSR Congress, Jana Sena and the Left Parties as well as Congress took part in the demonstrations.

Protesters closed important roads, including the key Chennai-Kolkata highway which passes through Andhra Pradesh.

They however took care not to create problems for the students going to appear in the SSC examinations.

The protest, which started around noon, continued for two hours.

The main protest was held at Vijayawada, the junction of two national highways, where the blockade created a massive jam as hundreds of trucks, buses and other vehicles remained stranded as crowds shouted slogans demanding the special category status for the state.

The ruling TDP was also part of the protest.

Supporting the blockade Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu asked his party workers to ensure that no law and order problem was created as it will send a wrong message to the investors.

He urged the party workers to wear black badges as mark of protest against the attitude of the Centre and observe peaceful protest.

YSR Congress leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy said the party would continue the protest by various methods until the Centre accepts the demand for the special category status.

Meanwhile Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu strongly rejected the allegations of corruption in Polavaram and Pattiseema Lift irrigation scheme against his government levelled by the BJP and Pawan Kalyan.

“Why did the BJP think of Pattiseema project after four years,” he asked while giving a statement in the state assembly.

He said the Pattiseema canal, which brought the surplus water of river Godavari to Krishna delta, had helped in saving crops worth Rs25 billion (Dh1.4 billion).

On the Polavaram project, he said the state government took responsibility of the project as there were apprehensions of delays if it was left in the hands of the Central government.

“There are 16 national projects across the country but the work has not started on 11 of them”, he said.

Saying so far an amount of Rs132 billion was spent on Polavaram project, Naidu added, “some political parties were carrying out false propaganda about corruption in the project. Completing Polavaram is the mission of my life”, he said.

He said charges of corruption were politically motivated and BJP leaders had started the false propaganda only after the TDP snapped the relations with them.
