Dubai: Marriage is more about personal connect and that transcends culture and country, feel Salima and Kunwardeep Singh who met each other in the hospitality sector in 2008 and have been married for over five-and-a-half years.

The traditional India-Pakistan rivalries do not stand a chance in their relationship and their love transcends the petty hostilities any kind of politics might create.
“I felt an instant connect with my husband and that seemed more important to me than anything else,” recalled Salima, 36.

“Although Salima is from Karachi and I am from Kolkata, we realised there was so much in common in terms of language, food, music, humour and culture. We are also fortunate to have very broad-minded parents on both sides who readily agreed to our proposal of getting hitched,” said Kuwardeep, 38.

The Singhs flew to Singapore for a civil ceremony in 2011.

Salima has visited Kolkata and Kunwardeep who plans to visit Karachi this year has already obtained a visa for his visit. “I never felt anything was different from back home when I visited Kolkata,” recalls Salima.

“Today, my parents-in-law are more close to me and often talk to me more than they speak to my husband.”

The Singhs believe that children will complete their marriage but want to be ready for it when parenthood comes. They intend to maintain the same cultural harmony and mutual respect for each other’s country and transfer these values to the next generation.
