Dubai: Married for 29 years, Karachi-born Shamira and Mumbai-born Ayaz Mitha represent a perfect cross-border bond — having spent most of their adult lives together. The two run their own businesses, have managed to preserve and nurture the best of the culture and art from across the borders and have kept the stress and tension out of their homes.

“We met in London where both of us were studying when we were 22 and after a year, we were married,” recalled Shamira.

The couple, who lived in many other neutral places like London, came to Dubai some years ago and feel the city provided them the freedom to be themselves and yet showcase the best of India and Pakistan.

“Dubai allows you to be just yourself and the Indian and Pakistani expatriates live here in perfect harmony, exhibiting a great cultural exchange, undying friendships and shared values.,” added Shamira

Ayaz seconded: “I think the politics aside, over 70 years ago we were one country. We have a shared history of struggle for independence, our cultures, sports, art, music, food are the same and I for one support the fact that peace should reign in all parts of the world and that includes the subcontinent.”

Shamira’s mother and extended family often visit the Mithas in Dubai while she often travels to Mumbai to visit Ayaz’ family and has made some lasting friendships there.

The Mithas have managed to maintain harmony in their relationship that has filtered down to their son Shazain.

“The only time our loyalties are tested is during a cricket match,” said Shamira in jest.

“While I usually slink away as my husband and son cheer the Indian team, during the last match in London this summer, I had every reason to cheer loudly while Ayaz and Shahzain sulked quietly!”
