Patna: A government-run medical college in Bihar has imposed a fine of Rs50,000 each on each 54 second-year women students, for repeatedly bullying their juniors.
The incident took place at Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), one of the three medical colleges located in Bihar.
The college’s principal, taking the matter seriously, has asked the accused students to pay the fine by November 25, failing which they will be prohibited from attending regular classes.
He has also called their guardians to intimate them about their illegal acts.
The action comes after an inquiry conducted by the Medical Council of India (MCI), which found the charges true during the course of inquiry.
One of the victims filed a written complaint with the MCI, after suffering routine ragging at the hands of her seniors, reports said.
“Our seniors have been regularly harassing us for the past several days. They abuse, assault and pressurise us to do work very much against our wishes. We are living under tension,” the victim girl wrote in her complaint filed on November 11.
Acting on the complaint, the MCI directed DMCH principal Dr R.K. Sinha to register a case against the accused students, and initiate tough action against the culprits, in the light of Supreme Court order in this regard.
Subsequently, the principal formed a three-member committee to probe the incident after which all the accused girl students from two semesters were asked to give their side of the story.
As they refused to open their mouths, despite repeated orders, the authorities later imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on each of the 54 women students.
Last week in a similar incident, the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College administration in Bhagalpur district imposed a Rs25,000 fine each on 33 second-year students for ragging their juniors.
Principal Arjun Singh imposed the total fine of Rs825,000 on the 33 students of the 2016 batch for ragging the 2017-batch students earlier in November.
