If you are in the market for a family car, two new options have added themselves this week to the already long list in your hand.

While Hyundai has launched the 2015 model of its popular saloon Sonata here, Japanese carmaker Suzuki has introduced its compact MPV Ertiga to the Middle East.

An immensely popular model in many Asian markets, especially India, the Ertiga offers the flexibility to carry up to seven passengers, or a large amount of cargo that would not normally fit in a regular family saloon or hatchback, depending on your priorities.

With a starting price of just Dh49,900, don’t expect anything fancy in there though, beyond standard features such as dual airbags, ABS and the like.

While Suzuki seeks to attract a new set of customers to its fold, Hyundai is looking to consolidate its strong position in the family saloon market with a revamped Sonata that has borrowed the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 lines from the larger Genesis saloon.

It comes armed with a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS thanks to its improved structural rigidity, and features like panoramic sunroof, rear and back window curtains, a smart bootlid that can be remotely opened and so on.

It’s on sale now with a 2.4-litre engine mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox, but before you head to the showroom, read our first drive report.
