Though I enjoy eating out and trying out various cuisines when I’m visiting new countries, my diet mainly consists of elaborate fine dining or grabbing a quick bite or fast food! None of this does anything great for my system. It’s something we all go through on holiday, and are likely to return home with a “gosh, I need to go on a diet” resolution.

I am not a big fan of dieting and have never followed one in my life, however, I do believe in giving the digestive system a break once in a while. Nothing spoils a good vacation more than the guilt of overeating.

Nutrition and inch-loss expert Rashi Chowdhary tells me that weight gain, bloating and lethargy are just signs that you’ve had a great vacation. So if you’re battling the post-vacation blues, try these useful detox tips and you’ll start feeling fit in no time.

1. Start your day with 1 teaspoon of virgin coconut oil as soon as you wake up, and follow it up with a cup of coffee, preferably black if you’re looking to burn fat.

This combination has a positive effect on your blood sugar control and will ensure steady levels first thing in the morning, which help in controlling your recently increased appetite and curb sugar cravings through the day.

2. Try drinking a juice made of cucumber, kale, mint leaves, ginger, lemon and 200ml chilled water. It works wonders for your liver health.

3. Replace wheat with white or brown rice — or better still quinoa — for a week and the feeling of bloatedness almost vanishes.

4. Add three portions of healthy fats to your daily meals. My best picks are one whole avocado, two tablespoons of virgin coconut oil and 12 macadamia nuts as a midday snack. These keep you full, and reduce your appetite naturally.

Along with these great tips, I follow these simple mantras myself:

1. Water: Now that you’re back home, drink up! Drink two bottles a day, starting with two glasses as soon as you wake up. I add mint leaves, cucumber slices and lemon in my water jug to add flavour.

2. Home-cooked meals: There’s nothing like simple homemade food. Go easy on processed foods and feel the difference immediately.

3. Stretch that body: Restart your gym schedule, yoga class or morning walks. Bust those calories.

The most important thing is to slip back into a routine soon, with renewed energy, fresh enthusiasm, new ideas and a positive frame of mind. After all, that’s what vacations are meant to do.
